Mobility impairment

What can help you travel by bus if you have a mobility impairement? The possibilities and conditions are listed below.

The legislation (Public Transport Accessibility Decree) stipulates that a bus has an entrance and exit that needs to offer unobstructed access between the bus stop or the platform and the bus. In addition, mobility aids must comply with safety requirements in order to be able to travel by bus. Agreements have also been made about what you can expect from the driver if you travel in a wheelchair.

Please note: You are responsible for compliance with the regulations. If you are unable to travel independently or if your (electric) wheelchair does not meet the requirements, Regiotaxi or WMO transport are good alternatives.

Travelling in a wheelchair

With the regular bus

Our regular buses have a low entrance and a foldable (electronic or mechanical) plank for optimal accessibility. In addition, every bus has an adapted spot where a wheelchair can stand and be secured. For safety reasons, not all types of (electric) wheelchairs are allowed in our buses. We are compliant with European regulations. This means the following:

  • A (electric) wheelchair including a wheelchair user may not weigh more than 250 kg.
  • The (electric) wheelchair may not be larger than 120 cm long, 70 cm wide and 109 cm high.
  • Your (electric) wheelchair must be secured against the partition in the designated wheelchair space in the bus. We recommend that you use the safety belt. However, this is not compulsory.
  • Parking backwards is not possible if there is medical equipment on the back of the wheelchair. In that case, you must use the available seat belt if it is long enough.
  • Always put the (electric) wheelchair on the brake.

In a flexbus

If you are going to travel with a flexbus and you bring an aid that cannot be folded, you have to order a 'wheelchair space' in advance. You can do this when making your reservation. If your aid can be folded, for example a walker, you don't have to do this and it is considered luggage.

In a local bus

Wheelchair users cannot travel on local buses. Local buses operate as an extra service instead of regular bus transport. The drivers of the local buses are volunteers and are not trained to transport passengers in wheelchairs. Wheelchair users can travel with regular bus lines or the WMO transport via the municipality.

Travelling with a mobility scooter

A mobility scooter is not allowed on the bus. Due to the construction of a mobility scooter it is not possible to secure a mobility scooter properly. The existing safety belt is not suitable for this and therefore we cannot guarantee safety.

An exception is the foldable mobility scooter. This can be taken along if it can be transported as luggage and can be placed in the available space. The passenger must be ready at the bus stop with the folded mobility scooter, so that he/she can board immediately upon arrival of the bus.

Travelling with a walker

You can travel on our buses with a walker.

  • Place the walker on the wheelchair space during the ride, provided it is not occupied. A passenger in a (electric) wheelchair always has priority on this spot.
  • Put the walker on the brake during the trip.
  • Sit in a passenger's seat on the bus. You are not permitted to sit on the walker during the ride. This is dangerous if the bus would suddenly stops.

Travelling with a balance bike

When folded, a balance bike can be taken in all vehicles if it is no more than 120 cm long, 70 cm wide and 109 cm high. Is the balance bike bigger? Then you cannot take it with you.
