Checking in and out

When traveling with your OV-chipkaart, bank card, paper ticket, or e-ticket, you must check in and check out. This also applies to those traveling with a free travel subscription. If you don't, you risk a fine.
At the start of your trip, hold your OV-chipkaart or bank card against the card reader screen on the bus.

Traveling with a paper ticket or e-ticket

Have you bought a paper ticket? And do you want to transfer? Then show your ticket to the bus driver when transferring (Note: whether you can transfer with a paper ticket depends on the conditions of the ticket you purchased). In some transportation areas, you can check in and out using the barcode on your paper ticket.

If you’ve purchased an e-ticket, you must always check in and out using the barcode on the ticket.

Forgot to check out?

If you forgot to check out with your OV-chipkaart, for example, due to a malfunction or because you forgot, you can request a refund of your balance. You can do this in three simple steps via uitcheckgemist.nl. Did you forget to check out with your bank card? You can correct this here.
Please note: This can be done for up to 3 trips per operator, per half-year period (from January to June and from July to December).
